Motion Analysis Lab/
Intelligent stage
Motion capture is the process of recording movement in order to reproduce it in a digital environment. The Vicon 8i system in the Intelligent Stage is used to capture movement and reconstruct this information into 3D coordinates. The system has eight cameras which are outfitted with infrared strobes that flood the space with infrared light. Reflective markers are worn by the person being captured and each of the eight cameras records the marker positions in 2D. By comparing this 2D information between several cameras the Vicon system is then able to reconstruct the equivalent motion in 3 dimensions. The system also contains knowledge about human physiology, a kinematic model which can be used to take this data one step further and reconstruct the rotation of joints in up to six degrees of freedom.
